So here is another Poetry broadside that I produced for Roger Hooper, this one is pen and ink, and the color was added in photoshop. The figures in this piece were a particular challenge. I ended up creating vector illustrations of each character in order to preserve a crispness that would stand out just enough against the heavily rendered tunnel. The tunnel was drawn on on 14″ x 14″ piece of bristol, but the final printing of this piece went up to 20 x 20.
This week: Stranded
Among the various pieces of gadgets and equipment aboard your average whirly you will often find a simple kite. Made from lightweight wood, durable colorful paper and packed with plenty of string, pilots , particularly in the early days of copter aviation, would pack these along with them in case their copters went down in some out-of-the-way place. The kite, flown high above, would act as a signal to assist in any rescue effort.
So this is going to be my last Weekly Whirly for a little while. I’ve decided to take a break while I work on some other projects that have been simmering on the back-burner a little longer than I had hoped. I’m not sure exactly how long I’ll be taking a break, maybe a few weeks, maybe a few months. I’ve got some looming deadlines for myself and some great events coming up that I need to finish work for. There is MICE, the ever fabulous BCR hosted comics festival in a month and a half. I’ll also be attending Paint and Pixel this year on October 20th, and I’m very excited about that. Oh yeah, and there is HELLBOUND III. The horror comics anthology that I’ve been editing, and I’m also part of the team producing a very special cover for that book. We are hoping to debut it at MICE this September as well. Just in time for Holloween. I’ll be sure to post updates as I can here, as well as whatever else manages spills forth from my pen along the way.

This Week: Cloud Scout II
If science is your bag there are any number of ingenious copter designs to suite your fancy. Almost all of these sorts of whirlies are custom built. Take the Cloud Scout II, outfitted with every kind of sensing equipment one would need when investigating the world above.
Yesterday a fellow cartoonist made the comparison of my work to that of the fabulous Swedish artist Mattias Adolfsson. Well, I took that as a huge compliment as I’m a big fan of Adolfsson’s work, and have been looking at his amazingly intricate drawings for a while now. So I changed what I was originally going to draw for today’s update, and made this as a tribute. In general, I’m probably more than a little bit influenced by his work. If you don’t know the work you should do yourself a favor and take a look at his blog. He was also featured yesterday on Juxtapoz magazines’ website.
This Week: The Scorpiocopter
This tough little copter is most commonly see at work digging in the earth. It’s equipped with two good sized digging claws which, when working in tandem, can chew a good sized hole in the ground with surprising rapidity. Unlike most other copters this one spends as much time on the ground as in the air. On site you will see it landing on it’s eight landing legs, digging rapidly, then lifting off again to deposit it load somewhere else. The landing legs are especially good in this constant dance, as they work independently and maximize it’s stability when hard at work with those front claws.
