In June of 2007 myself along with Jake Lee-High, Sean O’Brien, and Fred Wolflink created life in the Axiom Gallery. Well not exactly life, but pretty damn close. It was like some bloated single celled version of Frankenstein’s Monster, feeding off the energy of the modern world. Instead of a bolt of lightning we used the regular T trains that ran under the gallery to animate it. Each time the trains rumbled by the organism quivered with activity. Swelling turgid mylar sacs, flashing monitors under a mas of giant bubble wrap, and bouncing fleshy animations against the shimmering walls. Think warped science museum with a DIY vibe.
Anyway, a video of it is being shown at Axiom as part of the “Riders on a Train” show curated by Nancy Davies. You should go there and check it out, along with a lot of other fabulous work, or you can watch this video, or even better you can do BOTH! The show is up until December 19th.

Well, after spending about four months apart from it, I’m finally getting ink onto paper and moving again with “One Android”. Stop Gambling on Hunger was a fun project, I learned a ton, but it was also a time swallowing BEAST. It feels fantastic to finally have the time to work on my own work again, and to be working by hand again, hunched over my drawing table, late into the night. Almost all of the Stop Gambling video was done in flash, and while it is nice to be able undo a line you just drew in the computer, there is nothing that beats the feel of that ink laden brush. Mmmm silky.
So this push will be chapter three of book one., and from the looks of it, it might be the last chapter for Book one! There are still some big decisions I have to make about where it makes the most sense to cut the story, but no matter how I do it, it’s gonna be done before too long! So that means you all get to read it soon, aren’t you excited?
Of course there is still a lot to learn for me about preparing for printing, but that’s all just fun to learn for me now.
I also recently walked into a hand binding and printing operation while exploring the annual open-studios in town. It was pretty fantastic. So many great inky greasy metal plates, fine tuned, geared thingy-ma-whatsits everywhere, and a smell that is totally unique that I couldn’t hope to describe… Anyway they are called Quercus Press and they have lots of awesome. Sadly their website doesn’t really do them justice, but if you are anywhere near Waltham, you should check it out. The whole experience got me thinking about possibilties for publishing. I’ll, of course, have to look into costs but perhaps there are some hand bound “One Android” books in the future, at least I can dream.
As many of you know, I’ve been developing this video over the last few months with Pete Froslie, and it’s finally out! It’s my first foray in flash animation and the biggest production I’ve ever been in charge of, with a massive crew of four people working on the creative end of things.
It was developed with a number of folks in Washington DC to educate people on the nature of speculative marketing techniques and the damages that occur when ‘big money’ inflates commodities markets artificially. Sounds a bit technical but don’t worry, that’s why we made a cartoon out of it.
It’s a very serious issue that effects all of us without our knowing it, and something that can be easily fixed by re-enacting regulation to prevent greedy speculators from creating dangerous market bubbles, that raise the prices of our daily commodities just to make a profit.
Check it out here, or head over to the site www.stopgamblingonhunger.com where you can read a lot more information and get involved with the cause.
