Super excited for the show it’s become a highlight every spring as this will be my third year there. I’m not debuting any brand new comics but I will have plenty of From the Clouds and Hellbound III to go around. Not to mention a cornucopia of new prints and drawings!

The Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo is just around the corner. I’ll be there premiering my new mini comic “From the Clouds”. And also premiering will be “Hellbound III: Darkness” Boston’s Horror anthology of which I am the story editor, and I also worked on the wrap around cover. I’ll be posting about both of the projects soon. And I hope to see you at the Expo!
And check out these awesome posters by Ansis Purins and Dan Moynihan

MICE, The Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo

And I am super excited about it. Really really really am. There is so much great creativity and energy being pumped into this thing, it’s gonna explode on the 24th into a bonanza of comics joy.
I’ll be there selling comics including the brand new One Android Stories: Tide Lines. You can see a little more on that in the last couple of posts. I’m teaching a workshop on making Foldy Comics. Showing off two, yes two, techniques that let you make a comic out of a single sheet of paper, it’s a fun project for kids and adults alike. There will also be limited edition silk screen posters for MICE if you are interested in picking those up.
And of course don’t forget all the other fabulous exhibitors with tons of new work! 80+ at last count. I’ve been taking peeks at some of the new books debuting this year and I am absolutely agog at what folks are coming out with. So if you are into comics come out to the event, and hey, it’s FREE!

So I’ll be exhibiting this year at the sure to be fabulous MICE event! This is it’s second year, and it’s going to be even bigger and better than the first year to be sure! There are all kinds of great exhibitors, I think over 80 at last count. A whole slew of good panels and workshops to check out, (including one workshop that I’ll be hosting, I’ll let you know more about it when things are farther along), and lots and lots of great comics loving people to meet! MICE is presented by the ever wonderful group of comics makers and comics lovers the – Boston Comics Roundtable, and the Art Institute of Boston.
The show is:
September 24th from 10.00am to 6.00pm

Here’s the website for the event.
So I also happen to be one of the poster designers for the event. Which was a huge honor. It’s right up there guys:) There will likely be some limited edition screen print versions of this poster available at the show.
So MECAF was so much fun. I’m so glad I went. Met so many absolutely terrific artists and just as terrific patrons of the arts. I came away with a warm heart, a bunch of new friends, and fistful of comics that I’ve been basking in the glow of all day.
I do kinda wish I had managed to finish something of the Cat and the Wall. The show is definitely promoted towards being kid friendly, and there were quite a lot of them passing by the table. While One Android Stories isn’t kid “un”friendly, it isn’t the kind of thing that the chillins’ passing by would get excited about, and when parents asked about the “kid friendlyness” I just had to be honest. C’est la vie. There is always next year for that project.
Along with so many other great cartoonist I did get to meet Andy Runton of Owly fame. I actually spoke with him for a little while at my table and didn’t recognize him. Later, when I took a break from tabling to look at the rest of the show, I saw him behind his stack Owly books. Andy is a very very nice fellow, and gave me a few nice words of encouragement, after signing a book for me. If you’ve never read Owly, and/or have kids I recommend you check out his work. It’s the most charming comic, there is almost no text, and yet it’s one of the most readable, and well flowing comics out there. Not an easy feat to be sure.
I want to give a shout out to Rick and Casablanca comics, you have put together a truly fabulous event and I hope it continues ad infinitum! Well played sir!
I was so busy talking to folks that I didn’t have much time to sketch but I did find a few moments here and there to doodle. Below are a few bird concept sketches, a cat, and a jolly bearded fellow for no particular reason.
Heading to Boston Comic Con in a couple of hours. Doing some tabling with the Boston Comics Roundtable, going to a couple of artist talks and hopefully finding lots of great comics!
This Friday night (Nov. 5) from 7-9pm there will be an art opening highlighting the artwork from the anthology at the Atomic Bean Cafe in Cambridge, MA. I’ve got a couple pages on display and will be there. If you are around, swing by, check out the art, buy a book, smooze with the artists, have a drink! You won’t regret it!
Also check out these other Boston Comics Roundtable events in the near future.
